About

A studio built around the businesses on its doorstep

Grey Matter is a bespoke digital design, business and product automation studio. We bring the latest advances in digital technology to local businesses — deliberately, and only where they earn their keep.

Why local businesses

Large organisations have whole departments whose job is to keep up with technology. A business with fifteen or fifty people has an owner who is already doing three jobs. The gap between what technology can now do and what a good local business actually uses has never been wider — and that gap is where we work.

Bespoke, and unapologetically so

We do not sell templates, licences or page builders. Every system we hand over is built for one business, which means it does exactly what that business needs and nothing it does not. It also means you are never waiting on a vendor’s roadmap to change a sentence on your own website.

Technology in service of the ordinary

The most valuable work is rarely the most exciting. An enquiry that reaches the right person in ninety seconds instead of two days. A quote produced in four minutes instead of forty. A monthly report that writes itself. These are unglamorous wins, and they are the ones that change how a business feels to run.

Honest about limits

Not every problem is a technology problem, and we will say so. If a process needs a person, a conversation, or simply to be stopped altogether, that is the answer we will give — even when it means less work for us.

Beliefs

Four things we hold to

Restraint over noise

The best technology is usually the least visible. We add a system only when it removes more work than it creates.

Measured, not asserted

Every change is tied to a number we agreed on beforehand, so success is a fact rather than an opinion.

Built to be owned

No lock-in, no proprietary page builders, no dependency on us to change a phone number. You own the code and the accounts.

Built for year five

We make decisions for the fifth year of a system, not just the week it launches.

Let’s find out whether technology is the answer

Tell us what you are trying to achieve. We will tell you honestly whether we can help, what it would take, and roughly what it would cost — before anyone signs anything.
